About Life Matters

We help people to understand options and cope in the aftermath of their trauma.

Founded by psychologists, Life Matters, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) organization that enables people to find the personal and community resources to live productive lives in times of crises.

Our organization provides the practical education, training and support to help people to strengthen their capacity to recover after stressful encounters and turn life challenges into opportunities for personal growth; and to psychologically prepare emergency responders and their families to deal with the pressures involved in defending our country from future terrorist attacks and disasters.

Among our many achievements are the following:

  • Life Matters earned the acceptance of the New York fire service to design and deliver a psycho-educational outreach program that has assisted thousands of City fire personnel, Homeland Security personnel and their families in processing the trauma of September 11th and regaining emotional well-being.
  • Our founders served as informal advisors to multiple emergency planning and response agencies in New York and Connecticut including the New York National Guard and the Connecticut Federal Defender Office.
  • We testified before the US Congressional Subcommittee on National Security, Veterans Affairs and International Relations in Washington, D.C. on the third anniversary of the September 11th attacks.
  • Life Matters contributed lessons learned to On the Ground After September 11: Mental Health Responses and Practical Knowledge Gained, edited by Dr. Yael Danieli of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies and Robert L. Dingman of the American Red Cross. The book was a finalist in USA Book News' Best Books of 2005 awards.
  • Our team participated in an international exchange of lessons learned and educational programs that was an outgrowth of a presentation to 650 Critical Incident Uniformed and Civilian Emergency Responders in Frankfurt, Germany at the German Federal Congress of Emergency and Fire Chaplaincy and Crisis Intervention.
